Job Description

The Office of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Student and Family Services seeks a Case Manager to serve as a resource for the University community in addressing concerning and worrisome student behavior. This position will serve as a point-of-contact for campus community members who are seeking consultation and advice about our services, particularly for those students who appear to be experiencing distress. The case manager will provide direct case management for students who face significant barriers to their success as a Penn State student, and routinely coordinate those efforts with other Student Affairs units, university faculty and staff. The case manager will provide assistance, advocacy and support to students across a broad spectrum of issues and concerns such as complex behavioral and/or psychological challenges, social or adjustment problems, academic-related challenges and financial issues. Reporting to the Director for Student and Family Services, the Case Manager will have responsibilities which include: coordinating student services and making appropriate referrals to campus resources, outside agencies and other providers; providing post-hospitalization support by coordinating a plan for a student’s return to university life, such as coordinating academic advocacy for students returning to class after hospitalization; maintaining a case management database; assisting with the administration of the Student Emergency Fund; providing outreach to students, faculty and staff regarding responding to students in crisis; serving as a Student Affairs on-call staff member as needed; assisting with the formation of and serving as a member of a university care and concern team; and representing the office on other university and Student Affairs-related committees as needed. Typically requires a Master’s degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a college or university setting preferred. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, experience in mental health consultation in a college or university setting, and the ability to foster strong working relationships. This individual will have a broad vision for the role of diversity in achieving institutional excellence and demonstrate an informed and unyielding commitment to enhancing multiculturalism and inclusion. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in managing change and in building and supporting initiatives that promote equity and access. The successful candidate must be an effective communicator, have acquired exceptional interpersonal and relationship skills, cultural and ethnic sensitivity, and exercise emotional intelligence. This person must be skilled at building trusting relationships and credibility with a wide variety of stakeholders. This is a fixed-term appointment funded through June 30, 2018 with an excellent opportunity for re-funding.
