Department: School of Public Affairs

Salary Range: $15.00 – $17.00/hr

Work Hours per Week: 10-15
The Undergraduate Academic Advising team for the School of Public Affairs (SPA) strives to provide the best possible advising for our undergraduate students, and balances student development needs with individual student goals through an intentional advising curriculum and high student to advisor contact. We seek to add a graduate assistant with a rich and diverse experiential background of transferable skills who is committed to the ideals of a learning organization and who can capitalize on new ideas and ways of practice. A “best fit” candidate will be able to multitask on diverse, long-term projects, translate theory into practice, and build rapport with undergraduate students. We firmly believe that the success and development of our staff is integral to our work and, therefore, strive to provide our staff with opportunities tailored to their unique needs.

The Academic Advising Graduate Assistant will have a unique experience that is largely self-directed. While there are a number of possible activities and responsibilities, we encourage candidates to be creative and suggest additional initiatives and projects. Existing opportunities include:
One-on-one advising of undergraduate students through evening advising hours
Attend weekly Advising staff meetings
Develop a theory- based, 4- year advising curriculum
Design and implement academic skills programming catered to the needs of SPA students
Spearhead streamlining advising related forms, policies, and procedures
Develop an internal advising assessment plan
Conduct comprehensive research of current practices in academic advising at peer institutions across the country
Attend and participate in various campus-wide committees on topics such as advising, communication, transfer student needs, and orientation
Collaborate with other offices such as the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, The Academic Support & Access Center, and Career Services
Observe and conduct informational interviews with other Advising Units across campus, many of which employ different advising structures and strategies
Collaborate with University Faculty and Program Directors toward implementation of targeted programs and events
Other opportunities or areas of specific interest to the advising assistant
Educational Requirements: BA Required, concurrent enrollment in a graduate program in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field.

Ability to work independently
Attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Experience working with a diverse population
Preferred Requirements:
Past experience working with undergraduate students
Experience in one on one advising/mentoring roles with undergraduate students
Additional Information: The Academic Advising Graduate Assistant position may require evening or weekend hours.
