Full-Time Marketing and Communications Writer

Job Description

Position Summary: The Marketing and Communications Writer works with the Media Relations and Editorial staff on press relations and media needs for the University and, in particular, for the National Moser Center for Adult Learning; and helps to increase the visibility and enhances the image of Benedictine University’s programs and events through news releases, relationships with media members, Internet and social media content, and publications. The Marketing and Communications Writer contributes to and assists in the efforts of the Office of Marketing and Communications as it develops publications, public and media relations, marketing, Internet, digital media, advertising, recruitment, retention and fundraising programs that are designed to enhance the image and visibility of Benedictine University.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Write, edit, send and organize press releases and story pitches to local media for National Moser Center for Adult Learning sites in the Northern and Central Illinois regions and Southwest Arizona region. Work with the Associate Director of Media Relations to establish and maintain relationships with the press in these regions to maximize positive, and minimize negative media coverage for Benedictine University. Help to coordinate and schedule local media interviews with University personnel and manage media relations/access to University events. Support University-wide media initiatives as needed.

2. Write and edit editorial, advertising, promotional, and creative copy for a variety of National Moser Center uses and audiences, including but not limited to publications, websites and other marketing tactics per the direction of the Associate Director of Media Relations, the Marketing and Advertising Manager, and the Director of Marketing and Operations. Support University-wide editorial initiatives in this area as needed.

3. Create National Moser Center website content that is comprehensive, user-friendly and effective. Review and ensure content approval before pushing to the website. Ensure accuracy, timeliness and relevance of Web content. Identify website priorities by collaborating with National Moser Center and MarCom staff. Support the needs of the website in direct marketing and advertising initiatives, including landing pages and information submission forms as needed.

4. Write, edit and review copy for a multitude of Marketing and Communications publications and materials, including, but not limited to, postcards, brochures, books, magazines and advertisements.

Other Functions:

1. Collaborate with National Moser Center and Marketing and Communications staff to promote
University activities and programs.

2. Ensure all work is factually accurate, error-free and meets University brand standards.

3. Photography as needed.

4. Provide support for all Marketing and Communications projects and team/staff initiatives.

5. Work with student workers/interns as needed.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or Communications.

Experience: At least four years of journalism, public relations and/or content marketing experience. Experience with writing Web content, working with the media and in marketing and communications. Experience working with content management systems and HTML preferred.

• Familiarity and contact with appropriate media relations sources.
• Possess an understanding of effective marketing communications practices.
• Ability to work independently, balancing a broad variety of priorities.
• Possess basic photography skills.
• Possess a high degree of confidentiality.
• Have an understanding and appreciation for higher education.

Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications: Standard office business personal computer, Microsoft Office software with a high level of computer literacy; digital camera operation. Adobe Creative Suite Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver and Acrobat software a plus.

Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable): Student workers and interns.

Working Conditions: Sitting, reaching, fingering, talking, hearing, all visual activity. No significant demands associated with this job. Usual office environmental conditions.
