Full-Time Equity Specialist I (Investigator)

Performs a variety of professional and administrative duties in support of the day-to-day operations of a function, program, and/or dept; assists in program planning & development; interpret, monitor, & analyze information regarding operating policies & procedures; administers budgets; & coordinate academic and/or staff personnel matters. Performs professional administrative support duties; not a secretarial position.


The Equity Specialist I reports to the Executive Director of Institutional Equity and Title IX Coordinator. Under general supervision, the Equity Specialist I will investigate allegations of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, including alleged violations of Titles VI, VII, and IX. The Equity Specialist I is expected to act as an impartial party in conducting prompt, thorough, and equitable investigations and will draft and provide detailed reports regarding the findings of investigations.


Skills for this position involve fact-finding and the exceptional ability to write, communicate, and operate under pressure and tight deadlines with accuracy and professionalism. The Equity Specialist I must also have the ability to remain neutral and work collaboratively with diverse constituencies including students, staff, and faculty. The ability to prioritize and manage multiple and complex tasks is required.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct and manage investigations of alleged discrimination and harassment. This includes allegations of discrimination based on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion, national origin, disability or veteran status. This also includes sexual misconduct such as sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking.
  • Investigation duties will include, but are not limited to, developing an investigation plan; interviewing complainants and respondents; identifying and interviewing witnesses; identifying and collecting relevant documentation; appropriately documenting interviews and other investigative findings; analyzing information to determine charges and/or findings; and writing investigation reports.
  • Ensure that all parties involved in an investigation understand the process, their rights and responsibilities, and how to access other resources as necessary.
  • Prepare materials for, assist with, and participate in hearings as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Legal Affairs, Public Safety, Student Affairs, Athletics, Human Resources, and Academic Affairs.
  • Assist with creation and facilitation of equal opportunity and sexual misconduct prevention awareness training and presentations to the university community as needed.

Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of related experience OR a High School diploma and 3 years of college coursework and 7 years of related experience OR High School diploma and 10 years.


Master’s and/or terminal degree. Experience in a higher education environment.
