Full-Time EMSA: Director, Conferences and Events Venues and Operations

Job Description

The Conference and Events Venues and Operations Director is responsible for the Conferences and Events department,
the operations of Smith Memorial Student Union, and, in 2018, the event operations of the new Viking Pavilion, a
3,000 seat event arena currently under construction. The Director position requires close collaboration with
Athletics, Facilities and Planning, the University Place Hotel, Summer Housing and Conferences, and academic
units. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Campus Rec and Student Union Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

-5 years or more experience of student union, conference and events, or athletic venue management leadership
experience -5 years or more of personnel management experience demonstrating the ability to develop and communicate a vision so that others commit to fulfilling the mission and goals of the organization and the ability interact
with staff members and manage staff resources in a consistent and equitable manner.
-Master’s degree in business management, hotel management, student affairs, or similar
-Demonstrated expertise in budgeting and business planning
-Demonstrated expertise in successful customer service and hospitality
-Ability to identify organizational needs and initiate strategies aligned with the institutional mission,
strategic directions, and values
-Ability to successfully exchange information through verbal and nonverbal symbols and behaviors
-Ability to successfully communicate, understand, and interact among persons with differing assumptions that
exist because of ethnic and cultural orientations.
-Ability to identify primary markets and to develop and use effective promotions, communications, and informational pieces in a variety of media and formats.
-Ability to create educational environments and experiences that intentionally provide students with opportunities for acquiring intellectual and interpersonal skills, beyond the traditional place and time boundaries.
-Successful completion of a background check

Preferred Qualifications:

-7 years or more of progressive student union, conference and events, or athletic venue management leadership
experience
-7 years or more of personnel management experience
-Terminal degree in business management, hotel management, student affairs, or similar
-Professional involvement with ACUI or ACEED-I or similar organization
-Experience with box office and ticketing operations Proficiency in utilizing EMS software
