Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life

Job Description

The Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life is a key Student Affairs staff member at Penn State University. The Director reports to the Senior Director of Student Engagement Programs and currently supervises two Assistant Directors, two administrative staff members, and one graduate assistant, who collectively support Penn
State’s fraternity and sorority community. The community is comprised of approximately 7,400 students and has over 80 chapters among 4 councils:  the Interfraternity Council (49 chapters), the Multicultural Greek Council (11), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (4), and the Panhellenic Council (21). The Director will work with his/her team to create, develop and implement the vision for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life utilizing the recommendations
of the President’s Fraternity and Sorority Life Task Force as a blueprint. Responsibilities include providing visionary leadership; developing excellent relationships with students, alumni, national organizations, faculty, staff, and community members; engaging in strategic planning and assessment; developing expectations and implementing accountability measures for organizations; delivering  leadership development programs; implementing  training for council and chapter officers and alumni; demonstrating inclusivity and social responsibility; and demonstrating responsible financial management. This position will actively partner with key stakeholders and advocate for appropriate resources for the office to better serve the community. In addition to the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff, this position will work closely with Student Engagement, the Office of Student Conduct, Student Activities, Residence Life and Housing, Off Campus Living, University Police and State College Police, local community leaders,  the Center for Women Students, and the Student Orientation and Transition Programs Office, among others.
Typically requires a Master’s degree or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will have progressive experience in a fraternity and sorority life office or related role, strong working knowledge of National Panhellenic Conference, National Pan-Hellenic Council, North-American Interfraternity Conference policies and best practices, as well as national policies related to other multicultural groups, experience with the  membership selection processes across the four councils, and
experience with advising student organizations and a demonstrated ability to develop effective, professional relationships with students. Candidates must also have supervisory experience, strong knowledge of risk management procedures, the ability to mediate conflict and advocate for students, dedication to creating a
collaborative and creative work environment that is welcoming of diverse viewpoints and differences. Must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with individuals from a broad range of programs and disciplines, have the ability to manage multiple projects at once, be detail oriented and be able to prioritize. Must be willing to work frequent nights and weekends as required.
