Full-Time Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life

Job Description

PSU is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life. With the goal of creating a healthy, transformative and sustainable Greek life system for Penn State, the director will have proven experience in building a positive, values-based community for the 7,500 student members of Greek-letter organizations. Penn State has initiated a process to engage with student leaders and key stakeholders to re-imagine the Greek life experience at Penn State. The Director will work to create a new model that promotes leadership education, responsible behavior, community service, philanthropy and student health and safety. Penn State is determined to create a new, nationally-recognized framework for fraternity and sorority life and we aspire to build a model Greek life community for 21st century higher education. The Director will be responsible for leading our staff and engaging students in developing programs and experiences that advance the best values of Greek life and the 80+ fraternity and sorority chapters. The Director will interact with key stakeholders including students, alumni, parents, chapter advisors, community leaders, and staff from national and international Greek life organizations. The Director will be student-centered and able to create opportunities for forward-thinking, positive working groups comprised of key stakeholders to help shape the new vision for the Greek life experience. The Director will be collaborative, thoughtful and able to lead strategic planning that will result in organizational growth and change. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. Responsibilities include providing visionary leadership; developing excellent relationships with students and other key stakeholders; engaging in strategic planning and assessment; developing expectations and implementing accountability measures for organizations; delivering leadership development programs; implementing training for council and chapter officers and alumni; demonstrating inclusivity and social responsibility; directing the advising of the four Greek leadership councils (Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Panhellenic Council and the Inter-Fraternity Council) and demonstrating responsible financial management. This position will actively partner with key stakeholders and manage the office’s resources to ensure students enjoy a high-quality experience. In addition to the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff, this position will work closely with the Office of Student Engagement, the Office of Student Conduct, Student Activities, Residence Life and Housing, Off Campus Living, University Police and State College Police, local community leaders, the Center for Women Students, and the Student Orientation and Transition Programs Office, among others. Typically requires a Master’s degree or higher (Doctorate preferred) or higher plus six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduate degree in higher education/student development or related field preferred. The successful candidate will be an innovative, knowledgeable, committed, and passionate leader and will have progressive experience in a fraternity and sorority life office or related role; strong working knowledge of National Panhellenic Conference, National Pan-Hellenic Council, North-American Interfraternity Conference policies and best practices; as well as national policies related to other multicultural groups; experience with the membership selection process; experience with advising student organizations; and a demonstrated ability to develop effective, professional relationships with students. Candidates must also have supervisory experience, strong knowledge of risk management/Title IX/Clery compliance, the ability to mediate conflict and advocate for students, and dedication to creating a collaborative and creative work environment that is welcoming of diverse viewpoints and differences. Must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with individuals from a broad range of programs and disciplines, have the ability to manage multiple projects at once, be detail oriented and be able to prioritize. Must be willing to work frequent nights and weekends as required.
