Full-Time Director, Disability Support

Job Description

The Director, Disability Support oversees the provision of disability services for students at American University. The Director has responsibility for services and accommodations for students with disabilities in compliance with 504/ADA/Fair Housing Act regulations. These services ensure 504/ADA/Fair Housing Act compliance and support student recruitment and retention strategies. The Director oversees the counseling and accommodations functions related to disability support through the supervision of the Associate Director, Disability Support and the Manager, Disability Services. The Director oversees the Learning Services Program for first year students with learning disabilities through the supervision of the Coordinator, Learning Services Program. The Director is responsible for the assistive technology needs of students through the supervision of the Assistive Technology Specialist. The Director advocates for universal design principles to facilitate equitable access to facilities and learning programs. The Director represents ASAC on the Care Team and collaborates frequently with other Campus Life departments and academic units.

Educational Requirements:
Master’s degree in education, counseling, or related field. Doctoral degree preferred.

Minimum Requirements:
Seven years’ experience in disability support programs at the postsecondary level and with ADA/504/Fair Housing Act compliance
Experience reviewing disability documentation and providing disability accommodations at the postsecondary level
Demonstrated expertise in accommodating students with disabilities, as well as in academic skill development and counseling
Demonstrated public speaking ability and excellent verbal and written communication skills
Previous supervisory experience

Preferred Requirements:
Knowledge of developmental issues for college students and adults in postsecondary settings, transition and retention factors, mental health issues that affect college students, and diagnostic procedures for learning disabilities and ADHD
