Director, Academic & Health Careers Advising

Job Description

The Director, Academic & Health Careers Advising leads and administers all aspects of academic advising including development, implementation, evaluation, and modification of all programs and services for students and faculty advisors. The Director also provides specialized services for current and transfer students as well as alumni pursuing post-graduate opportunities in the health professions, with a specific focus on gaining entrance to medical school and allied health professional schools. The Director chairs the Health Careers Evaluation Committee (HCEC ), serves as the lead interviewer in HCEC interviews, and writes committee letters. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, advising pre-health professions students; monitoring and assigning faculty advisor loads; coordinating and delivering relevant advising-related programs, speakers, and events; maintaining current content on the academic and health careers advising portal and/or website; participating in the full range of campus-wide events; data tracking and assessment; and preparing reports and publications.

Education/Experience:

Master’s degree, plus 5 or more years of experience in college-level academic advising (health-professions advising required), or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Doctorate degree preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:

Experience implementing best practices and current trends in academic and health careers advising.Knowledge of health careers and their associated educational/admissions pathways.Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong group presentation skills.Effective interpersonal and cultural competency skills, and demonstrated ability to communicate professionally with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, parents, and all other constituencies.Management level planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-
solving skills.Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and discretion, and to maintain integrity with handling sensitive and confidential information; ability to operate in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA ).Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, prioritize, and execute multiple concurrent initiatives/events in a fast-paced environment, to perform effectively with fluctuating workload, and to meet
established deadlines.Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying academic policies.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team in leading and implementing initiatives.Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, student records systems, early alert monitoring systems, social media and web communications, and database systems.Self-motivated, flexible in managing multiple priorities, with a dedicated work ethic and aptitude for professional networking and cultivation of professional relationships.Commitment to integrity, excellence, learning, and community.Commitment to continuing professional development.Experience implementing effective educational assessment practices.Ability to make sound decisions using individual discretion and independent judgment.Knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws regarding student records.Commitment to integrity, excellence, learning, and community

Physical Requirements:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Position requires the ability to travel and additional hours for meetings and events, including days, evenings, and weekends.
