Job Description

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates to serve as Dean of Students. This is a twelve-month, full-time opening with a start date no later than June 1, 2017. In brief, ASMSA is tasked with providing extraordinary opportunities for a diverse group of students. Established by the General Assembly in 1991 as a public, residential high school to serve talented and motivated Arkansas juniors and seniors from throughout the state as a school of choice, ASMSA—located in historic downtown Hot Springs and adjacent to Hot Springs National Park—is one of only 16 public, residential high schools in the United States focusing on advanced educational experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as the arts. ASMSA offers more than 60 courses for college credit, and all students earn an average of 45 hours of college credit while finishing high school. Graduates achieve an average ACT composite score of 30.3. Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and The Washington Post have ranked ASMSA among the nation’s Top 25 high schools over the past four years. The Dean of Students serves as the senior administrator over ASMSA’s residential experience and living/learning community of 230 students. As a member of the Administrative Council, the Dean reports to the Director of ASMSA. The Dean provides leadership of a residential life staff of thirteen employees, including residential mentors, Residence Life Coordinator, Community Developer, school nurse, and support staff. The Dean guides the ASMSA Strategies Team of employees across both the academic and residential spheres tasked with intervention and promoting student success. The Dean is responsible for establishing a vision, providing frameworks, implementation, and evaluation of a dynamic residential community that accounts for student wellness, safety, service learning, community development, non-academic programming, and leadership development. The Dean oversees student welfare and discipline, budgeting of resources, coordination of employees, and staff development. The Dean serves as the primary liaison with external food service and security contractors in assessing campus needs and coordinates with groups utilizing campus for summer programs and conferences.

A Master’s degree in student affairs, education, or related subject from an accredited college or university is required. A minimum of three years experience in residential schools, student affairs, residential life, or related fields is required. Knowledge of student development theories and ability to integrate theories into daily practice as well as documented experience in managing critical incidents, responding to crisis situations, and providing effecting guidance to other professional and support staff are essential skills. Significant experience in mentoring, administration, workshop presentations, and staff development is preferred.
