Full-Time Communications and Outreach Specialist

Job Description

The communications specialist plans, develops, and implements all
public relations activities, social media strategies and communications,
both internally and externally, in consultation and coordination with the
Director of Communications for the College of Arts and Letters which
this position has a dotted line of responsibility. Develops and
implements strategies and support materials in the following areas:
university relations; external academic relations; Church relations;
public and media relations; and communications and relations with ND
students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Oversees all Center print, media,
and online materials and assists with other functions of the Center as
needed, including but not limited to event planning, director’s activities,
and program development and execution.

Through all of these efforts, the communications specialist helps build
and maintain the Center’s reputation as the world’s premier Catholic
ethics institute—both within the university, at other elite academic
institutions, with Notre Dame alumni and interested parties and in the
public square—with particular emphasis on the Center’s positive and
influential impact on Notre Dame’s Catholic mission.

Specific duties include:

• 1. Strategic Planning: Responsible for creating, implementing, and
measuring the success of a comprehensive communications, social
media and public relations strategy that will enhance the Center’s
image and position, both internally and externally. Ensures consistent
articulation and communication of the Center’s desired image, mission,
as well as continuing promotion of activities of CEC staff, faculty, and
affiliated scholars across all platforms.

• 2. Design: Responsible for design, production, and distribution of all
communications and social media tools, both internal and external to
the university, including PR activities and materials, newsletters, annual
reports, brochures, press releases, emails, blogs, apps and web
content, collaborating with other staff members and approved third
party resources where appropriate. Maintains consistent and
professional appearance of all print and electronic materials.

• 3. Media Relations: Manages all internal and external media relations
and develops strong relationships with media representatives.
Maximizes media opportunities for the Center via radio, TV, and social
media/Internet appearances, vetting outlets where appropriate.
Contacts members of the media, including internal University
Communications, to set up and promote events. Acts as the Center’s
representative with the media and all internal university

• 4. Digital & Web Content: Creates rich and innovative web content
optimized for search engines and develops strategies for generating
traffic to the Center’s website and social media pages. Further
develops, deepens and maximizes the Center’s online social media
presence (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) and updates Center
accounts regularly.

• 5. Reporting: Seeks out the most updated information on all Center
activities, such as the director’s activities; any activities of staff, fellows,
and affiliated faculty or scholars; donor relations; Center events and co-
sponsored events; strategic plans; etc. Monitors all trends relevant to
the Center’s internal and external reputation as well as its position
within the University.

• 6. Budgets: Develops plans and budgets for the communications and
PR programs and its activities. Develops, implements, and monitors
systems and procedures necessary for the smooth operation of the
communications and PR functions, and reports progress and
opportunities for improvement. Keeps informed of developments in the
fields of communications and public relations, as well as all internal and
external institutional developments relevant to the communications

• 7. Assessment: Helps ensure that the Center’s mission and vision are
fully and clearly known to all relevant internal and external
constituencies, audiences, and media representatives. Develops and
coordinates means to seek regular input from the Center’s key
constituencies regarding the quality of its programs, events, and
communications, as well as the Center’s importance to the University
and other important external constituencies. Benchmarks the Center’s
communications, social media and public relations strategy, activities
and tools against University, peer institutes and academic centers and
other external resources and develops appropriate recommendations
and strategies for consideration by Center leadership to update and
improve such communications, social media and public relations
strategy, activities and tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in relevant field.

3 – 4 years of related experience.

Experience in communications, marketing, or public relations required;
Ability to write clearly and creatively for a broad academic audience.
Demonstrable interpersonal and presentation skills for frequent contact
with clients and colleagues across university.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with visual design, print production, and online
communications strongly preferred. Experience in academic
environment preferred.
