Full-Time Chief of Police

Job Description

The State University of New York College at Old Westbury is
seeking to fill the position of Chief of Police. The Chief
of Police will be responsible for the administration and
efficient operation of a university police department and
oversees all security on campus and also oversees safety
and security activities on campus during rentals of college
facilities. Supervises the maintenance of law and order on
campus and the enforcement of Federal, State, and local
laws as well as the rules and regulations of SUNY and the
campus; oversees the total operation of University Police
Department manpower to include the Deputy Chief of Police,
one Investigator, four supervising Lieutenants, twelve
Police Officers, three civilian Dispatchers and two other
civilian employees; initiates and controls appropriate
preventive and security initiatives to control crime on
campus; acts as a liaison with Federal, State, and local
law enforcement officials and agencies to assure a mutual
understanding of policies; oversees the scheduling of
personnel in the university police department to assure
their efficient deployment; acts as a liaison with the SUNY
System Administration Coordinator of University Police
services, oversees the training and deployment of
university police personnel; oversees the recruitment
hiring and background checks for new or transferring
employees prior to employment; oversees in service training
as needed and required; maintains liaison with the campus
administration to assure the accomplishment of university
objectives in relation to the University Police Office;
administers a program of campus safety as directed by the
office of the Commissioner of University Police/Security.
This is a Management Confidential position and is FLSA
exempt, not eligible for the overtime provisions of FLSA.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of
twenty (20) years of police service required, at least ten
(10) years of which were spent in a command rank, with a
demonstrated progression of leadership experience and
responsibilities. Certified New York State police officer
with New York State police instructor certification
required. Emergency preparedness experience required. The
successful candidate must be authorized to work in the
United States.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in related field
and Campus or University Police law enforcement experience
preferred. Familiarization with New York State police
accreditation and experience in multicultural educational
settings preferred. Candidates should have experience in
conducting and supervising both criminal and internal
investigations, experience in conducting training, and
experience in supervising various administrative functions,
including quartermaster and fleet maintenance
responsibilities.
