Full-Time Associate Vice President and Dean of Students
Works collaboratively with the Vice President and others in leading the division, recognizing and responding to
opportunities and challenges, setting strategic direction, managing resources, and developing key relationships with academic and administrative colleagues to further the mission and the goals of SDES.
This position is the lead divisional contact for all training and preparation of staff in emergency preparedness
and crisis management of SDES. S/he works closely with the Office of Emergency Management, University Police and other campus partners to collaborate in bringing the division to a level that would meet any security challenge or crisis event. Publication of materials and opportunities for the education of the division in the field of safety and security is also an important role for this position.
The Associate Vice President and Dean of Students serves as the lead for the division providing oversight and strategic vision to compliance for Title IX, Cleary Act and Title V requirements, and maintains an effective
collaborative relationship with the Office of EEO to ensure that exceptional support services to educate, prevent, care and enforce these requirements are provided for all students. In this role, s/he will keep updated and informed evolving regulations, laws, requirements identified best practices and trends to sustain a UCF community where all members are committed to student safety and success.
The Dean of students serves as the point person responsible for all complex and far-reaching student matters. S/he is charged with guaranteeing the development of positive, proactive programs and student development services and
systematically assesses, evaluates, and updates the VP on the effectiveness of the programs, policies and activities that falls under the Office of the Dean of Students.
Leads an Asst. Vice President, Assistant Dean of Students and director-level staff of incorporate programs and
services into the UCF experience by supporting, developing and directing staff to meet goals, assess outcomes, and
create 21st century services for their departments.
Provides leadership and oversight for the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, which includes Student Conduct and Integrity and Ethical Development, as well as Student Legal Services, Health Services. Counseling and
Psychological Services, Neighborhood Relations and Safety Education, Academic Services for Student-Athletes. S/he must provide knowledgeable oversight of these departments’ operations and devise an optimal staffing model to ensure strong strategic and day-to-day leadership. S/he is involved in the planning, development, budgeting, staffing, facilities, strategic plan, and assessment activities of these departments.
Serves as divisional and university committees as needed or required.
As Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, performs other duties as required or deemed appropriate by the Vice President including functioning for the vice president in her absence. Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and seven years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor’s
degree in an appropriate area of specialization and nine years of appropriate experience. Additional Minimum Requirements Preferences
Candidates should have (1) an earned doctoral degree in higher education administration, student personnel,
counseling, psychology, or a closely related field; and (2) at least seven years of professional experience in Student Affairs with progressive leadership and supervisory responsibilities, including experience/involvement with
crisis management, student conduct programs, student programming, and student leadership programs. A substantial
portion of that experience should have been at a large, complex institution.
• It is preferred that the candidates have an earned doctoral degree in higher education administration, student
personnel, counseling, psychology, or a closely related field, and extensive professional experience in Student
Affairs with progressive leadership and supervisory responsibilities, including experience/involvement with
crisis management, student conduct programs, student safety and care, and Title IX. A substantial portion of that
experience should have been at a large, complex institution.
• Demonstrated exceptional management/administrative skills (including policy, budget, supervisory, program development, and evaluation responsibilities).
• Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain productive, positive, and accountable interpersonal relationships.
• Excellent analytical and written, oral, and digital communication and presentation skills.
• Extensive knowledge of higher education, student affairs philosophy and models, best practices, and the culture,
policies, and procedures of a large higher education institution.
• A seasoned student-focused, student affairs professional with knowledge of emerging trends and needs among
undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
• Demonstrated experience working with and advocating for ethnically and culturally diverse student populations.
The successful candidate will be visionary but practical, experienced, innovative, adaptable, and a proven leader who has solid operational knowledge of and demonstrated, documented success at a large, complex, and dynamic institution. Special Conditions
The functional title of this position is Associate Vice President and Dean of Students.
