Housed in the Division of Student Affairs, the Department of Recreation Services at Iowa State University (ISU) strives to provide a holistic and diverse approach to health and wellness that encompasses physical, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, social, and emotional wellness. The department offers high-quality recreational facilities and a wide variety of programs and services to promote a healthy mind and body and enhance the overall quality of the educational experience at Iowa State University. The Associate Director of Recreation Services – Student Success (ADRS-SS) position will complement the mission of both the University and Recreation Services by implementing, maintaining, and overseeing programming and services to support student success, which inspires, educates, and empowers students and members of the ISU community to cultivate lifestyles that enhance health and wellness. The ADRS-SS will be responsible for student development, department wide assessment, and personnel supervision in support of a quality co-curricular experience while assisting the Director in establishing department-wide strategic goals and objectives. This position has direct supervision of three full-time area Assistant Directors including Fitness, Intramurals, and Outdoor Recreation; one Coordinator of Sport Clubs; and indirect supervision of five program coordinators, four graduate assistants, and over 350 student employees. In the Director’s absence, the ADRS-SS shares administrative and supervisory duties with the other Associate Directors of Recreation Services.

The successful candidate will possess excellent organizational, computer, and communication (both written and verbal) skills. The successful candidate will possess management competency; personnel management competency; and decision-making skills. The candidate will possess skills to appraise and utilize data to update and institute new programs and services for all Recreation Services participants. In addition, the candidate must be able to assist the Director in the overall administration and operation of the department to include development of strategic priorities, departmental policies, personnel needs, and staff development goals and planning.

The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree and five years of related experience. Preferred qualifications include: a master’s degree in recreation administration, sports administration, student personnel administration, higher education, physical education, sports management or a related field; experience supervising professional level staff or comparable experiences (i.e., personnel management skills developed through leadership certificate programs; leadership of peers within work teams, etc.); demonstrated experience with assessment of programs and services; experience with developing and assessing learning outcomes and demonstrated knowledge of student development theory; demonstrated commitment to diversity and cultural competence; and experience working in a multicultural environment. Current national certification by one or more of the following is also preferred: National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA); Graduate of School of Recreational Sports Management (Level I or Level II); or Graduate of Executive Institute.
