Full-Time Associate Director of Development, SPA (9295)

Job Description

The Associate Director of Development for the School of Public Affairs (SPA) is a major gifts fundraiser for SPA at American University. The Associate Director of Development is responsible for achieving aggressive fundraising, solicitation, cash, pledge, and visit goals, which are set annually. This position manages a prospect portfolio of at least 150 active rated prospects for SPA, with giving capacities from $100,000+.

The Associate Director is expected to personally manage these relationships – to cultivate, solicit, close gifts, and steward alumni donors, as well as identify and qualify new prospects for SPA. Extensive domestic travel and potential international travel is required in this position to personally engage alumni and secure funds for SPA. The Associate Director serves as a key member of the Dean’s external relations team and as an ambassador of the School. This position works closely with the Chief Development Officer and the Central Development Office on moves management, stewardship and donor issues to raise funds for the School of Public Affairs and shares in the responsibilities of managing the school’s advisory council/s. The Associate Director participates in overall Office of Development activities in support of the broader objectives of the Vice President for Development.

Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

Minimum Requirements:
At least five years fundraising or non-profit experience or its equivalent required, including demonstrated record of success in cultivating and closing gifts at the $100,000+ level, preferably in an academic institution. Must possess excellent communication skills and exhibit confidence communicating with high profile constituents, both written and verbal Professionalism, flexibility and strong interpersonal skills are of critical importance Must be self-motivated, self-managed, able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, have outstanding organizational abilities, good judgment, and strong ethics Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office required, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the Internet.

Experience with Data-tel
Experience working in other cultures and fluency in multiple languages.

Additional Information:
This highly visible position in the fast-paced SPA Office of Development raises major gifts for the School of Public Affairs and interacts one-on-one with key donors and constituents. This position requires frequent travel, some evening and weekend work. Access to reliable transportation is required.
