Full-Time Assistant Director, Student Retention Programs

Job Description

Provides career counseling and related career services to
students throughout their academic experience, with a
primary focus on assisting first and second-year students in
identifying an academic and/or career direction. Develops
and maintains effective working relationships with academic
advisors, faculty, and staff. Designs and implements
educational career development programs.

Provides individual and group counseling and self-assessment
advising for current and prospective students with concerns
regarding choice of major/academic program or career
direction. Provides assistance in identifying and
understanding their interests, abilities and values and how
they have a direct or indirect connection to academic majors
and occupational fields. Conducts appropriate evaluation
and follow-up. Provides career counseling and job search
assistance for students and alumni to assist them in
identifying appropriate careers, internships, or
occupational outcomes.

Assists the Director in career education efforts through
participation in the organization and implementation of
First Year Experience and related early retention programs.
Develops and facilitates workshops, instructs career
development courses and seminars and conducts Dialogue
presentations. Collaborates with the Director, Student
Success Center, Office of the Provost, and key academic
advising staff of each academic unit in initiating and
evaluating programs designed to facilitate the retention of
students in their first and second years. Assists in the
development and presentation of other career education
programs for undergraduate and graduate students, as
necessary and appropriate.

Assists clients in gaining access to occupational,
employment and internship resources, including but not
limited to, the Career Library, online resources and
databases, social networking sites, and self-assessment
resources. Maintains communication and cooperation with
other offices on campus to assist students in developing
awareness of career options and University services in
relation to their career planning process.

Assists in updating and maintaining content for relevant
portions of the Career Services website, providing
information on resources to assist students with academic
and career exploration.

Serves as the liaison for Career Services to other schools
and colleges. Assists the Director in providing student
outreach by developing ongoing relationships with key
academic units including Student Affairs and administrative
personnel, student and community groups/organizations as
well as local, regional and national employers. Assists in
developing literature and drafting articles for campus
publications on a full range of career developing topics,
with a special emphasis on choice of academic major, career
exploration and self assessment.
