Full-Time Assistant Director of Residence Life

Job Description

Maryville College is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Residence Life   . This is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in position.

Job Summary:   Assists Director of Student Services in implementing and coordinating the Residence Life program. Serves as Resident Director for one hall, and provides oversight and/or management for additional halls on-campus. Contributes leadership to residential programming and supervision of residential life professional and student staff. This is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in position.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

Residence Life Management

  • Selects, trains, and supervises Resident Directors; provides Resident Directors with orientation to Residence Life policies and procedures; keeps staff informed and up-dated on any information and/or revisions concerned with Residence Life and individual halls through weekly staff meetings.
  • Serves as the liaison between the Residence Life Office and the Physical Plant department; schedules meetings to discuss issues in halls and effective ways to increase teamwork.
  • Oversees the selection, training, and supervision of student staff.
  • Participates in Residential Life phone coverage, in collaboration with Director of Student Services and Assistant Dean of Students.
  • Coordinates Fines and Damages reporting.
  • Responsible for making decisions in emergency situations.
  • Assists the Director of Student Services in the implementation of Residence Life programs such as staff development and training, programming, and special projects.
  • Coordinates Care Package and Linen sales.
  • Organizes residence hall openings and closings related to breaks and the beginning and ending of semesters.

Building Management

  •  Provides student staff with orientation to respective hall; provides residential programs; assists each student staff member in evaluating the necessary skills to do a thorough and competent job; keeps student staff informed and up-dated on any information and/or revisions concerned with Residence Life and individual halls through weekly staff meetings.
  • Monitors the use and conditions of all facilities in the residence hall including common areas and student rooms; supervises periodic room inspections and personally inspect the area’s buildings at regular intervals to see that fire safety, maintenance, and living standards are maintained; monitors damage assessment records.
  • Interprets institutional policies and procedures to student staff and residents; acts a liaison and advocate between students, staff,  and the student conduct board; responsible for seeing that appropriate policies pertaining to the residence halls within that area are implemented.
  • Supervises preparation of the residence halls for opening and closing at specific times throughout the year; monitors check-in and check-out procedures.
  • Maintains a high level of student contact and visibility; posts office hours; provides referrals for residents with academic, career, and/or personal concerns; serves as liaison to families and College constituents as appropriate; serves as resource/referral of information concerning College life.
  • Promotes and assists staff in developmental and social programming in the halls.

General responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, as well as professional development and training sessions. Performs other duties as assigned. Regular attendance is required. Working efficiently within group settings and independently.

Requirements: Master’s degree required with a specialization in Higher Education, College Student Personnel or closely related field. Must have experience with residential students, student conduct, student programming, and supervision. Demonstrated computer skills and ability to learn new software programs. Valid Driver’s license required, with ability to attain a Tennessee license within 6 months.
