Job Summary

The Learning Center (LC) Assistant Director works as a team member to develop and maintain a wide range of academic support services for students. The LC Assistant Director supervises the Learning Center Program Assistant, coordinates a variety of tutoring and outreach programs, assists the Learning Center Director with the
overall day-to-day operations of the Learning Center, teaches college success courses, and meets with individual students experiencing academic difficulty. The Assistant Director individually manages the development of projects from concept and directly implements solutions to completion. As colleagues under CASA, both the LC Director and Assistant Director provide services and support to new student orientation and Summer Bridge programs. The
Learning Center Assistant Director assists the Director in the ongoing management of 6 major programs year round. This includes hiring and supervising 6 student leads (graduate and undergraduate) and over 150 student tutors/peers a year.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Supervise the LWC Program Assistant, including hiring and training

2. Work with individual students on academic skills matters

3. Coordinate the America Reads program, supervise the America Reads graduate assistant and instructors, and hire, train, and supervise tutors

4. Coordinate the Families & Youth in Transition program and supervise the FYIT graduate assistant, hire, train, and supervise tutors

5. Coordinate the Project Success Program along with hire, train, and supervise graduate assistants

6. Work with university partners to coordinate peer tutoring and other support programs for graduate students, distance learners, international students, and branch campus students

7. Follow up on requests for tutoring, handle any problems, complications or complaints

8. Assist the Program Assistant with the coordination of Writing Center administration (calendar, Writing Center Preceptor absence, etc.)

9. Assist Program Assistant with computer/technology needs; work with ITS to ensure that system is functioning

10. Participate in tutor trainings and ongoing tutor consultation

11. Teach and develop curriculum for college success course

12. Assist Program Assistant with the development and implementation of student outreach aspects of Learning Center publicity

13. Develop, schedule and facilitate Learning Center workshops and participate in the campus-wide Student Success Workshops committee

14. Manage the development of projects from concept and directly implement solutions to completion

15. Coordinate follow-up efforts with schools colleges, and student service departments to ensure that students in academic difficulty receive academic support

16. Assist in the planning and administration of the Muscat Scholars Program

17. Perform other duties related to Student Life including coordinating retention projects, planning and facilitating orientation activities, assisting with graduation ceremonies

Minimum Requirements

Master’s Degree in Education or related field and at least two years of experience working in a university or college Learning Center and managing student support programs required.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Teaching, student advising, and supervisory experience expected. The candidate must also possess strong written and oral communication skills and have an understanding of the vision, mission, and values of a diverse, urban, Jesuit university. Occasional weekend and evening hours are required. Proficiency with a variety of technology systems and tools expected.
