Full-Time Assistant Dean of Students – Office of the Dean of Students (A1700413)

Job Description

Nature of the Position:
The Assistant Dean is a full-time academic professional staff member in the Student Assistance Center in Office of the Dean of Students in the Division of Student Affairs. The responsibilities of the position are centered on our mission to support the academic and social development, as well as the retention of University of Illinois Students. Assistant Deans provide assistance to students (and families), faculty and staff on a walk-in, by phone and via e-mail communication, who are seeking information, guidance and support about a range of student related academic, health, behavioral and personal issues.

The Assistant Dean serves as liaison to colleges within the university and various campus offices for the purpose of maintaining current information about resources as well as processes and procedures relevant to the most prominent/common needs of Illinois students. The person in this role may also participate in outreach activities to help students acquire knowledge and skills which will enhance their ability to function effectively in this University community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide assistance to students (families), faculty and staff who seek guidance around a range of student related academic, health, behavioral and personal issues in the Student Assistance Center.
2. Develop and maintain an accurate working knowledge of campus resources and, policies and procedures which are most relevant to the needs of Illinois students and the ability to articulate these clearly to constituents.
3. Assist and advocate for students experiencing crises. This includes working with students directly as well as consulting with faculty and staff colleagues to assist them in managing student crises.
4. Serve as a liaison and consultant to colleges and other campus offices to include providing support and consultation, training and outreach and receiving feedback about processes and procedures.
5. Actively contribute to the development of policies, practices and procedures that are brought forward for group discussion.
6. Serve as Emergency Dean for seven to nine weeks each calendar year. The Emergency Dean is on call at home from 5:30 pm-8:30 am for a period of one week. The emergency dean handles most calls by phone but will occasionally be called out to the site of an emergency.
7. Participate in student outreach to help student acquire knowledge and skills which will enhance their ability to function effectively in the University community.
8. Serve on Division of Student Affairs/University committees and other university related events as needed. This may include some after-hours activities.
9. Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.

  • Clear understanding of and ability to work within organizational roles and structure.
  • Capacity to work with a minimum of direct supervision balanced by the ability to recognize when consultation and/or notification of a supervisor is appropriate.
  • Demonstrates ability and willingness to assume responsibility for complex situations and to respond with flexibility.
  • High level understanding of working with confidential and sensitive student information and issues.
  • Capable of instilling confidence in students (families) and colleagues about one’s grasp of policy and procedures as well as the ability to manage complex situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative/collaborative working relationships with a diverse community of students (families), faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to sustain high levels of engagement and commitment in doing work that focuses on a particular range of student related issues.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience serving in an on-call emergency response team rotation is preferred.

Master’s Degree in counseling, higher education, student personnel, or related field is required. Candidates must have three to five years of professional full time work experience in student affairs. Candidates must have demonstrated proficiency in assisting students in crisis and/ or who need high levels of support.

Appointment Type – Regular twelve month, 100% academic professional appointment.

Salary – Commensurate with experience.

Start Date – As soon as possible after closing.
