Assistant Coach, Field Hockey

Stevenson University


Under the General Supervision of the Head Coach, the Assistant Field Hockey Coach provides support of the intercollegiate field hockey program, but is not limited to the following aspects: preparation of training/practice sessions, pregame organization and scouting reports, team travel arrangements, team gear, social media, recruiting, managing recruiting database or Front Rush Recruiting Program, assist with recruiting tours of the University, assist toward instruction/knowledge of the college field hockey game, and professional communication in regards to the Coaching Staff and individual players.

Department: Athletics: Field Hockey


Bachelor’s degree plus one-year experience competing and/or coaching at the collegiate level with a commitment to Division III philosophy or equivalent combination of education and experience. Collegiate level coaching experience and experience with NCAA preferred.


Knowledge of Field Hockey.
Ability to objectively evaluate physical skills in the areas of physical potential and mental capability for intercollegiate athletics.
Working knowledge of NCAA DIII field hockey rules and the ability to teach critical skills, regulations and competitive strategies and training techniques. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of the University, the MAC and the NCAA .
Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
Ability to effectively communicate both within and outside the College including, but not limited to, student-athletes, parents, recruits, coaches, athletic training staff, and athletic department staff.
Ability to provide effective leadership to student athletes to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance.
Ability to travel with team to scheduled events.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, working evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Medium work: Position involves both inside sedentary work and outside work on the field coaching and training situations with student-athletes; Major hazardous conditions can result from the operations of field maintenance equipment; Exposure to fertilizer, lawn chemicals, and weather conditions.

Essential Functions:

Monitor the conditioning and training of student-athletes working closely with Strength Coach and Athletic Training Staff.
Assist Head Coach by informing captains and individual players of the responsibilities, duties, roles, etc.
Work with Head Coach in developing line-ups, game strategies, practice itinerary and individual workouts and practice needs for various student-athletes;
Serve as role model for the student-athletes by exhibiting ethical and professional conduct.
Participate in clinics, exhibitions and camps as approved
Represent the Department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events, as requested.
Assist with developing and maintaining a system to identify potential recruits and to work closely with area high school and travel coaches to recruit quality student-athletes to Stevenson University;
Work in conjunction with the Head Coach to encourage the development of psychological, social, and mental skills necessary for the student-athlete to be successful in the classroom, on the field, and in future endeavors;
Assist with scheduling for practices and competition, interfacing with administrators and representatives from other schools.
Monitor the conditioning and training of student-athletes working closely with Strength Coach and Athletic Training staff;
Represent Stevenson University at various local events, throughout the community;
Cooperate with Stevenson University athletic personnel for efficient utilization of shared facilities;
Assist with fundraising opportunities and budget preparations;
