Full-Time Area Director

Job Description

The Office of Housing and Residential Life at Radford
University invites qualified applicants for the position of
Area Director. This position is a full-time, twelve-month
live-in position that includes a furnished on-campus
apartment including utilities, and meal plan when halls are
in session. The Area Director will report to the Director
of Residential Life.

The Area Director (AD) supports the development of
approximately 600-980 students living within a residential
community and provides leadership and coordination for a
residential area consisting of four or five on-campus
residence halls. The Area Director supervises 4-6 graduate
level hall directors and indirectly supervises 20-30 student
Resident Assistants. Additionally, the AD also manages
central office responsibilities and serves as an important
member of the Central Staff team. As such, the AD promotes
solid administration and develops new programs to promote
student learning.

Primary duties and responsibilities include: administration
and supervision, support for student development and
learning, crisis management, student conduct administration,
programming, physical facility management, and university
and department committee assignments.
Required Qualifications: Must have an advanced degree in
Student Development, Higher Education Administration,
Counseling, or related field; or an equivalent level of
education, training and work experience. Demonstrated
experience with conflict resolution and mediation, staff
supervision and training, and sensitivity and flexibility in
dealing with problems and situations. Knowledge of residence
hall student issues. Demonstrated skills in human
development, oral and written communication, and the ability
to interpret policies, objectives, rules and regulations to
subordinates. Demonstrated computer proficiency in current
office software such as Microsoft Office. Candidate must
possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and customer
service skills with the ability to prioritize effectively,
multi-task, be detail-oriented, interact in a diverse
community, and adapt to changing situations. Demonstrated
commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning
environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Progressive Residential Life
experience and live-on experience in a University setting.
Demonstrated ability to effectively present information and
respond to questions from parents and students. Experience
with the student conduct process (hearing officer, conduct
board advisor/member) in a University setting. Experience
fostering student leadership development and advising
student organizations. Understanding of student development
theory and student retention.
